Rhythm and Movement for Self Regulation
RAMSR is a program for young children that aims to support their attentional and emotional regulation skills, as well as mental flexibility, inhibition, and working memory.
It is based on a number of neurological areas of research – including music therapy, the cognitive benefits of music education, and self-regulation development.
Our Vision
For all early childhood practitioners and parents internationally to...
have the confidence, skills & resources to use evidence-based rhythm and movement activities for self-regulation support for children.
In particular for those children who do not gain access to specialist music programs and associated benefits, and for those children whose life circumstances mean they are most at risk of poor self-regulation, learning, & wellbeing outcomes.
The program was first designed and piloted in 2016
Created by Professor Kate Williams (Queensland University of Technology) and her Neurologic Music Therapy and early childhood education colleagues – Rebecca Eager, Dr Sally Savage and Cathy Nielson.
RAMSR is a series of rhythmic movement activities that encourage beat synchronisation and challenges one or more of the executive functions in a fun and engaging way.
RAMSR is available in both online and in-person format training.

What people thought of the course...
“The course was easy to follow and clearly set out. Any questions or concerns were responded to quickly by both course coordinators as well as other participants.
I’ve always felt that doing a course online would be quite a challenge but this was quite straight forward.”
“Where children exist on the regulation continuum significantly influences each child’s capacity to engage in learning. The RAMS module provides educators with practical, evidenced-based plans to guide children in developing regulatory functions through rhythm and movement – a fun, effective and flexible approach to meeting children where they’re at. My pedagogy has evolved as a direct result of completing RAMSR.”
“We are running the program at first group time, as we are finding the children much calmer throughout the day. we are seeing real benefits of running the RAMSR program with the group, the children are growing in confidence and self-esteem. Children who don’t normally participate in music, are now joining in with the sessions.“
“I have been doing RAMSR with my class since the start of the year… my students are much calmer in the mornings once doing this and I have noticed students who wouldn’t do it, in the beginning, have now started to join in and really engage.“
“I like it that in the program, students are not corrected when they make a mistake as this sends the message that they are not musical or good enough which can end up being a real barrier as they get older.“
“I have children with delays with receptive and expressive communication, imitation and joint attention and have seen progression with all of the children in working with the RAMSR sessions.“
